Executive Search for the Energy Industry

Rockwood Associates and its successor firm, Rockwood Energy Search LLC, have been active within the domestic energy business since 1986.

Many of today’s senior managers were once our candidates. They and other clients have benefited from our knowledge and thoroughness. They come back to us for advice or assistance every year.

Renewables Structurer/Deal Support JO 1289P
Location: Northeastern US

A renewables client with a growing portfolio of generation facilities across the US is seeking a structurer/deal maker to deal with a growing need to hedge purchases and sales of power.

The group that this individual would work in is responsible for managing the firm’s commercial operations, including its energy and renewable energy credits position.  The group  deals with power offtakes, the hedging of the firm’s positions, and the identification and evaluation of the commercial aspects of the firm’s development sites.

The job would deal with various issues.  One key one would be contacting counterparties for bids on hedges, another would be talking to physical power counterparties in several of the markets that the firm operates in.

There is plenty of scope for someone to use all of his/her energy markets knowledge, and to move toward an independent deal making role supporting the firm.

Desired Background

Individual should have 3-10 years in the energy markets with at least two years in power-related markets.  Any ERCOT experience would be especially helpful.

The nature of the position is that of a structurer/marketer who analyzes the problem, proposes a solution (to create a hedge of a certain value with certain products), and then is responsible for putting that deal in place.  The majority of the firm’s commodities transactions are intertwined with non-recourse project financings, so an ideal candidate would have experience with commodities transaction terms and conditions impacting the financing structures (collateral structures, event of default  limitations, etc).

The individual would know how an energy trading desk works, and be able to go out and get bids from the various players, analyze the bids, work with counterparties to tailor transactions to fit the client’s requirements, and convince management that these are reasonable bids given the state of the market.  Experience in the physical aspects of the electricity markets would be a benefit for supporting projects in markets where physical PPAs are required due to lack of liquidity in the financial energy markets.

Although this role is anticipated to initially include deal structuring and transaction support, for a candidate that showed the ability to manage the process and close transactions, the option to quickly transition into a transaction-lead position as the firm’s market breadth expands is a realistic evolution of the position.

Travel required would be on the order of 10-20%.

A BS/BA is required; an MBA would be helpful.
