POSITION DESCRIPTION:  Monitoring and understanding transmission congestion in RTO markets. Using power flow or production cost software for:

  • Understanding transmission limitations, costs, and risks for long-term opportunities
  • Identifying congestion that would create power-trading opportunities
  • Predicting locations, duration, and causes of transmission limitations, resulting in transmission congestion
  • Collecting and processing data necessary to understand transmission limitations, costs, and risks for long-term opportunities

Job Description:
This position serves as the main liaison between IT and the corporate functions of AEP.  
A primary role is bringing IT expertise and strategy to bear as an enabling resource to support both current business activities and future strategic direction.  As planning director, the incumbent will actively guide and participate in the formulation of the IT strategic plan as it relates to the business strategy.   

This individual will collaborate with business management in the planning, definition and implementation of information technology solutions to maximize AEPís return on technology investments. The candidate will directly manage professional staff including Business Systems Analysts, Systems Architects and Project Managers. This individual will work closely with application development and support, infrastructure and external vendor resources to coordinate the activities across the IT System Development Lifecycle.

  • Plan and coordinate the delivery of IT system development projects, whether internally or externally sourced, to the Corporate functions.

Credit Analyst

Responsible for the administration of the company's credit risk management policy. The function primarily supports AEP's commercial operations (trading, marketing and fuel procurement) as well as other functional groups within AEP and is responsible for determining the financial ability of AEP's counterparties to deliver contracted products and services and to meet payment obligations. Transmission Substation P&C Engineer

POSITION DUTIES:  24 x 7 operation:  This position is required to be staffed 365/24/7.  The Hourly Traders work 12 hour rotating shifts including nights, weekends, and holidays.

Optimize AEP's portfolio in the real-time market through bilateral transactions with customers and/or optimal scheduling of real-time dispatched resources.  Communicate openly and effectively with the term traders, other regional hourly traders, production coordinators and generation dispatchers.  Work closely with the Dispatch group and Production Optimization group to make reliable and economic decisions on real-time unit issues and intra-day planning.

1.  Optimize the AEP system portfolio by executing purchase and sales in the intra-day market.

2.  React to real-time operational constraints, including transmission constraints and unit outages.

3.  Build and maintain solid relationships with customers.

LOAD RESEARCH ANALYST

SALARY RANGE:  $54,200-$90,600

POSITION DUTIES:  Perform or assist in studies to obtain and analyze load research data; assist in the evaluation of various demand-side management techniques and applicability for AEP; assist in the analysis and development of current and future customer, group, and system load characteristics for application in planning, forecasting, engineering, rates, operations, and marketing.

The Market Operations Analyst-Systems is responsible for supporting the business subject matter experts relative to applications and systems interfaces in order to document, test, and optimize the flow of data between critical real-time systems. While the business subject matter expert is the owner of the basis for the business data and process flow, the Analyst is the facilitator of that data flow, enabling the documentation, development, testing and support to occur while not impacting the daily business activity of the business subject matter expert.

The Analyst function is critical to streamlining market operations and ensuring its real-time reliability by methodically working through the process, understanding all of it’s impacts not only on the primary dataflow but also fully understanding the data flow changes on all of the other aspects of the market operations and interfaces.

Coordinator - Fuel Emissions Logistics

SALARY RANGE:  $46,000-$83,600

The FEL group is responsible for all fuel purchases (coal, lignite and natural gas) and transportation logistics to AEP power plants. In addition, the group is responsible for compliance emissions marketing and coal and emission position management as well as the purchasing of bulk commodities needed for post-combustion emission controls (urea purchasing for SCRs, lime and limestone purchasing for scrubbers, trona for SO3 mitigation, activated carbon for mercury control).   FEL includes the management of AEPs River Operations, Cook Coal Terminal (in Metropolis, Illinois), lignite mining operations, AEP coal labs, railcar maintenance and coal yard services.

The Consumables Group Coordinator will be responsible for maintaining a working knowledge of the bulk commodities markets (urea, lime, limestone, trona, activated carbon), staying abreast of market pricing and trends, supply availability, identifying potential operational constraints, managing a portfolio of contracts, participation in contract negotiations and establishing delivery schedules with suppliers.  The Coordinator will be responsible for assisting senior buyers, managing the inventory for assigned plants, providing the plants and appropriate groups within the AEP organization with pertinent information and assuring that each plant receives commodities that meet AEP specification.   This position is also responsible for coordinating with Logistics, Generation, Commercial Operations, Engineering, Accounting and other groups within the AEP organization to schedule deliveries, minimize quality issues, manage and maintain accurate costs and resolve other commodity related issues.   This position is responsible for understanding AEP's regulatory environment and the jurisdictional requirements of each transaction. The Coordinator will assist other buyers within a team environment.

This position occasionally requires a 40 plus hour workweek and regular travel to AEP power plants, vendor facilities and industry related conferences.

EDUCATION:   Bachelors degree in: Chemistry, Engineering, Earth and Mineral Sciences, or equivalent education and/or experience.

EXPERIENCE: Minimum of 2-8 years of experience in the energy industry with a background in chemistry, engineering and/or earth and mineral sciences is preferred.  Familiarity with contract negotiations, regulatory, plant, transportation, and mining operations would be helpful.

Manager - Public Liability Claims

SALARY RANGE: $80,600-$108,000

Manager - Public Liability Claims will be responsible to the Managing Director - Risk and Insurance Management to plan, lead, organize, and control the public liability claims function for the Company. In addition to managing a staff of 5 professional public liability adjusters, remotely situated throughout the 11 state operational territory of the AEP System, this position is responsible for investigating and handling claims in central and eastern Ohio.

Principal Accountabilities:

Three (3) years of supervisory responsibilities in a claim management environment or related experience.

Operations Financial Performance Consultant

SALARY RANGE:  $73,900-$108,000

DESCRIPTION:  Serves as analytic and performance management expert for the Shared Services Business Unit (an organization of approximately 2,500 employees with operations budget exceeding $600M annually), applying statistical and financial assessment techniques and tools to identify and resolve complex business problems and to expose opportunities for enhanced efficiency and strategic alignment.    Responsible for the initiation, development and fulfillment of shared services financial and operational planning and analysis, including, but not limited to:

SUMMARY:   Person will support/carry out analyses of power system operation within an RTO-LMP market environment.

Transmission Control Area Coordinator

SALARY RANGE:  $69,300-$84,900

Responsible for carrying out the safe, efficient and continuous operation of the transmission system, for arranging and approving switching operations and removal of equipment for maintenance of transmission lines and transformers, for maintaining adequate EHV and 138 kV voltage levels, and for the proper notification regarding outages and system occurrences to management.   Has the responsibility and authority to comply with all NERC Reliability Standards, specifically regarding control area operations and the performance of the NERC functions of Balancing Authority and Transmission Operator, in order to help ensure the stable and reliable operation of the bulk electric system, which includes real-time actions to maintain adequate generation reserves and the initiation of emergency actions, including load shedding, during actual and contingency facility overload conditions.

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:

  • Approve and coordinate facility outages, loadings and operating voltage levels with appropriate personnel within interconnected companies, generating plants, transmission dispatching centers, ERCOT, PJM and SPP.
  • Coordinate restoration of service to customers and the transmission system following unplanned system emergencies, and ensure system reliability is restored as quickly as possible in a safe and efficient manner.   
  • Maintain clear and detailed records of all pertinent activities involving the EHV and 138 kV transmission system, as necessary, to provide a history of significant operating events.
  • Direct the operation of EHV and 138kV load and voltage control equipment as required to maintain proper load and voltage levels on transmission facilities.
  • Notify designated management personnel of major interruptions, abnormal conditions and other emergency conditions.
  • Initiate and coordinate system emergency plans and procedures, including load shedding, required to mitigate actual and contingency loading conditions, voltage collapses, capacity deficiencies, energy deficiencies, and other system emergency conditions.
  • Monitor the area control error metering on both an instantaneous and average basis to maintain the proper balance between generation and load as prescribed by NERC Reliability Standards.
  • Monitor line loadings, transformer loadings, voltage levels, and system operating limits on the transmission system and coordinate and initiate with PJM and SPP the appropriate control actions (TLR's, etc.) as required to prevent overloading transmission facilities.
  • Monitor the real-time interchange metering points and enter corrected MW data when metering data is incorrect or missing.
  • Assume other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: 

  • Two-year associate degree in Electrical Engineering
  • Technology or the equivalent education and/or experience.
  • Minimum of eight (8) years' experience in a Transmission Operations organization, including two (2) years as a Transmission Dispatcher I (or equivalent senior level), including thorough knowledge of the EHV and 138kV transmission system and related facilities and operating procedures.   
  • Demonstrated leadership ability and willingness to accept responsibility.   
  • Must be NERC certified at either the Reliability System Operator or Balancing & Interchange & Transmission Operator level and maintain certification through requirements as set forth by NERC.
  • Depending on Desk assignment, may be required to obtain PJM Transmission Operator certification within 2 years.
  • Must pass the EEI System Operator/Power Dispatching applicant exam.
  • Must be able and willing to work a rotating shift schedule.
